	BACKYARD SOIL SCIENCE 6 August 2002 Dad and I dug a 9 foot hole in my sandbox to study the layers of soil. At 9 feet we hit water! The soil was very sandy and it looks like there have been at least three fires here in the past.


	Here are the types of soil we found. We also found nails and a piece of glass.


	We sifted each type of soil and took measurements of how deep each type occurred.


	After we were done studying, I put a message in a bottle and dropped it down into the water. Maybe some other home schooled kid 500 years from now will find it!
