October 2002
Maine Archaeology Month

Mom and I got up at 4AM on 13 October 2002 and drove to Bar Harbor, Maine to spend the day at the Abbe Museum.  The museum showcases Maine's Native American Heritage.  They were celebrating "Maine Archaeology Month" which was created by Gov. Angus King just a few years ago!

My favorite part of the day (besides having my mom all to myself) was spending time with Marie, the museum educator.  She helped me make a coil pot and her volunteer, Ann taught me how to measure and date arrow and spear heads.  I had a blast!

I met an archaeologist, Rebecca Cole-Will and spent time with her in her lab studying different bones of animals.

Hi Shannon-

It was great to have you at the Abbe Museum.  I really enjoyed how enthusiastic you were about archaeology.

Maybe we'll see you this summer when I do a workshop for young archaeologists.  Until then, have a great year.  Hope you like the pictures.

Sincerely,
Marie

Here I am making a coil pot just like Maine's Native Americans did a thousand years ago.  Archaeologists suspect that the bottoms of these pots are narrow so they could be put into a fire for cooking.  What do YOU think?

I love being a home schooler in Maine!
