The Old Operating Theatre was apparently forgotten until it was re-discovered in 1956 at the top of an old church which had been part of a hospital. Here is where students of surgery and the paying public observed operations prior to the discovery and use of anesthesia…..

There are a number of tourist attractions offering blood and gore but we managed to avoid most of it.  The Old Operating Theatre was as close as were came….and most was left up to the imagination…  Check out the virtual tour.

On this day we also visited the National Portrait Gallery.  We were mainly interested in the Elizabethan portraits, the gallery has an amazing collection— with many copies of the images available in the searchable online database.
