The family of William Debenham (W.D.) Crain

Excerpted from “History of Saline County, Missouri,” page 95

William Debenham Crain, my grandfather, was born January 18, 1858 in Illinois.  His great Grandfather, John Crain, was born in England in 1725 and emigrated to Culpeper County, Virginia in 1749.  He had a brother, James Crain, Minister of the Church of England, who also came to Virginia where he [John] married Sarah Rousseau and reared nine-children.

Grandpa's father, James Newfield Crain, married Catherine [Kate]  Debenham in 1857.  She was born in England June 15, 1838 and came to this country at the age of 14.  They became parents of nine children, my grandfather being the oldest.  His father died when grandpa was fourteen years old and his mother died in 1905.

After coming to Saline County grandpa married Laura Ann Bishop, daughter of Charles [son of Job Bishop & Holly Kelley/Kelly] and Mary Catherine Masters Bishop.   They made their home near Herndon, where the were involved in farming and reared six children- Nell, Earnest, Ralph, Horace, Ruth and Frank.  The youngest, Frank, was my father.  After he [Frank] died [struck by lightning], grandpa and grandma took mother and me into their home as well as another granddaughter, Mary Weaver.  Mary later became the founder of Home Interiors, Incorporated of Dallas, Texas.

In 1925, they moved to Fayetteville, Arkansas, where their son Earnest was living.  Grandpa died  December 23, 1936 at the age of 78 and was buried in [Fairview Cemetery] Sweet Springs, Missouri.

Grandma remained in Fayetteville where we visited her many times. After her health failed she moved to Poplar Bluff with her daughter Ruth.  She died December 25, 1962 at the age of 99 and was buried beside Grandpa at Sweet Sporings [sic].  Submitted by Norene Crain Clark.

William Debenham Crain family taken in about 1893. Willam D. and Laura (Bishop) are the parents; from left to right, the kids are Nell, Horace, Ernest and Ralph G....better known as RG. My great-grandmother Bishop lived to be 99 and I remember meeting her. RG is my grandfather. He was born in 1888 so he's about 5 or 6 in the photo. I assume it was taken at their farm near Herndon, MO.”
