Mrs. Fred Crain Departs Life at Danville, IL

Augusta Eagle, Thursday, November 28, 1957

Funeral services are being held this afternoon for Mrs. Martha Newcomb Crain, 84, member of a pioneer Augusta family, whose demise occurred Sunday at Danville.

Many old time friends will join relatives in paying their last tribute to Mrs. Crain by attending the final rites at the Augusta Methodist Church.  The pastor, Rev. Clifford Bruner will officiate.  Wendell Mathis will sing an arrangement from one of Whittier's poems, accompanied at the organ by Mrs. Leo McCrutchan.

Burial will be in the Pulaski Cemetery. Pallbearers are Harold and Earl Hoyt, Bernard Cain, Glen Robinson, Harry Melvin and Kenneth Sights, some of whom are sons of girlhood and lifelong friends of Mrs. Crain.

Mrs. Martha Crain, daughter of the late Frank and Sarah Gordon Newcomb, passed away at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Philip Hawes, Danville, Sunday, Nov. 24, 1957, where she had made her home for the past three years.  The very sudden passing of Alberta Hawes in the Hawes' home three weeks ago was too great a shock for Mrs. Crain to endure at her advanced years.

She was born in Pulaski neighborhood, south of Augusta, December 29, 1871.  She attended and graduated from Augusta High School.  On June 17, 1896 she married Fred Crain and they lived for several years on the Crain farm.  They moved to Augusta in 1911, later moving to Galesburg while the children attended Knox College.

After the demise of her husband in 1920, Mrs. Crain took employment as housemother in fraternity and sorority houses at Madison, Wis., Urbana and Ft. Collins, Colorado.  She also served for a few years as director of a YWCA residence hall  at 131 East 4th Street, Oklahoma City.

Besides the daughter, Mrs. Dorothy Crain Hawes of Danville, and son Donald Crain, of Grand Junction, Colorado, there survives one grandson, Philip Hawes, of Danville.

Mrs. Crain's service to the Kingdom of God reached back to the time of her being superintendent of the Pulaski Sunday School for several years.  Her constancy at worship services of the Augusta Methodist Church, where she maintained membership, is a blessed memory.  She was also a member of Augusta chapter, Order of the Eastern Star.
