Horace “Harry” Newfield Crain 1861– 1937

Horace or Harry Crain was 12 years old when his father, James Newfield Crain fell into the Missouri River & drowned while working on a bridge in 1873.  Horace was the second oldest of eight children.  By the 1880 census, he apparently was no longer living with his mother, Kate (Debenham) Crain and siblings.

The photo above was taken in Portland, Oregon probably around 1890.  By 1898, Harry had moved to Jerome, Yavapai, Arizona.  On Aug 21, 1898, he married Kitty (Christian) Boyd.1  It appears that there was no issue from this marriage but Kitty did have a young son, James Fred Boyd (aka J. Fred Boyd).  On 25 Oct 1914, this step-son of Harry’s, Fred Boyd married Myrtle Mickle and in 1921, they had a son, James Lester Boyd.

Kitty Boyd (Christian) Crain was the proprietor of the Boyd Hotel (photo) in Jerome.  Kitty and Harry are found managing the hotel from 1900, 1910, 1920 and 1930 census records.  The hotel was apparently abandoned in 1937 and has recently been restored.  Details are available at the Jerome Historical Society.

Kitty died on 10 April 1932 while residing at the hotel.  Harry, as informant, indicates on Kitty’s death certificate that she was born on 16 January 1862 in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, that her father, William Christian, was a native of England and that Kitty had been in Arizona for about 50 years.

Harry died on 22 January 1937.2  Harry’s step-son, J. Fred Boyd was the informant which potentially explains some of the apparent inaccuracies in the info provided on Harry’s death certificate (birthplace of Harry’s father is indicated as Oregon and his mother’s name is imperfect).

Harry’s death certificate indicates Harry’s full name, Horace Newfield Crain, as well as the names of his parents, James H. Crain [James Newfield Crain] and Catherine D. Newfield [Catherine Debenham].  Fred Boyd indicates that Harry had been in Arizona for 41 years. Both Kitty and Harry are buried at the Valley View Cemetery in Clarkdale, Arizona.
