Donald Frank Crain (1898-2003)

Donald Frank Crain and Gertrude Resene Crain

Married 19 April 1924

After his return from World War I and graduating from Knox College in Galesburg, IL, Don Crain moved to Colorado in 1922 to teach high school Spanish and lived there for 52 years.

Don first lived in Berthoud, Colorado where he met and married Gertrude Resene, daughter of Swedish immigrants to Iowa, Lewis Resene and Martha Olson Resene.  Gert’s sister's husband had a drugstore in Berthoud.  When the brother-in-law died of TB, Gertrude came out from Iowa to help her sister.

Don was living in a hotel about three doors down from the drugstore.  One Sunday afternoon, he was playing poker with the boys.  Gert came in to get change from the hotel and they were introduced.  Don said, “She was a nice, buxom, sweet girl and of course I was single.  She was wearing a big diamond — engaged to a guy who worked at a big bank down in Denver.”

“Soon after, I invited to her a dance.  I figured she was safe since I didn't want to get married or get involved.  Silly me.  We started going together to different dances.  One day I noticed she wasn't wearing her diamond any more.  I said, ‘Where's your diamond?’  She said, ‘Well, I gave it back to him.  I decided I didn't love him anymore.’”

“A short time later, I'd been out in Utah (probably staking uranium claims or practicing his hobby of ‘rock-hound’ –smh) and I came back and she was talking about going to a dance with Johnny Stroh, a big Dutch farm boy out there.  He was working at her sister's drug store.  I said, "Well, I guess you like John Stroh more than you like me?"  She started crying and said, "You know I wouldn't marry Johnny Stroh!"  "I don't suppose you'd marry me either?"  "She said, "Yes, I would!"  I used to kid her about proposing to me.  We were married early the next year, April 1924."  We were married 59 years when Gert died.  We celebrated our 59th and she died a couple of weeks after that.”
