Ben Crain had a clothing store from 1877-1942, in Augusta, Illinois
"Uncle Ben carried only the best Oppeheimer suits and Florshiem shoes in the little ol'town of Augusta", says Uncle Don Crain. He explained that while clothing was expensive, the best was not much more in cost.
Uncle Ben wanted Don to join the Masons. Don’s Uncle John “Dad” Newcomb and Don belonged to Knights Epitheus. Ben offered to give Don the money to join but Don didn't take him up on it. Ben really wanted Don to join but he did not.
According to Phil Hawes, Uncle Ralph Crain came back for Uncle Ben's funeral from Havana, Cuba. After the funeral, Ralph Crain was like "Why did Uncle Ben die so early? He was only 94!” Come to find out, he had been moved to the city of Chicago by his daughters a week before. The family suspected that he died of a broken heart. |
