JAMES BAXTER was born 1811 in Maryland and died 1897, probably in Birmingham Village, Schuyler County, IL. He married ELIZABETH COOPER in Carrollton, OH, daughter of JAMES COOPER and RACHEL JONES. She was born 1810 in Pennsylvania and died 1882.
The Baxter's migrated to western Illinois from Carrollton, OH in the late 1850’s. According to the story in the book story in the book "Augusta's Story,” upon Rachel Baxter’s arrival in the village of Pulaski, Illinois, William Harris Crain saw her and remarked to the others nearby as the buggy passed, “I am going to marry her if she’ll have me.” She was about the age of 17, her future husband was 22.
