REV. WILLIAM3 CRAIN  (JOHN2, SAMUEL1) was born 01 March 1802 in Culpeper County, VA, and died 03 November 1884 in Huntsville, Schulyer Co., IL.

He married HARRIET ELEANOR TONG in 1832 in Southeastern Missouri, daughter of JAMES TONG and ELIZABETH THOMPSON.  She was born 24 June 1817 in Fredericktown, MO and died 01 November 1884 in Huntsville, Schuyler Co., IL.  Read the autobiography of Harriet’s grandfather, William Tong, a Revolutionary War soldier who fathered 26 children.

Crain Farm was located just across the county line from Pulaski, Illinois, in Huntsville, Schuyler County.  Rev. Crain served in the Pulaski Methodist Church.

According to Ralph Waldo Crain's chapter in Augusta's Story, the mother of Harriet Tong died when Harriet was three years of age and an aunt, Eleanor Tong Newfield/Neufield took the girl to rear and after Harriet married Rev. Crain, the Newfields always lived near her.  In 1834, the uncle, Abraham Newfield, came with Rev. William Crain from Cape Girardeau County, Missouri to Schuyler County, Illinois.

According to Dorothy Crain Hawes, "Harriet was an only child born June 1817.  When married in 1832, in Southeastern Missouri, she was 14 years 9 months and her husband was 30!"

The Crain Family

The words of Ralph W. Crain excerpted from the book Augusta's Story,Compiled by the Martha Board Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution

William Crain, my grandfather, was born on March 1, 1802, in Culpeper Co., Va. Both his father, John Crain, and his grandfather, Samuel Crain, were born in this same county in 1774 and 1741 respectively.  Samuel Crain was a soldier in the Revolutionary War.  In 1797 he moved with his family to Kentucky, and died in Fleming County in 1829. His children were: John, Joseph, James, Lewis, William, Samuel, Nancy and Elizabeth.

On October 14, 1796, John Crain, my great-grandfather, married Sarah Rousseau, who was a cousin of William Henry Harrison, of "log cabin and hard cider" fame.  Sarah Rousseau was a great-granddaughter of Hillaire Rousseau, who, exiled from France after the revocation of the Edict of Nantes in 1685, came first to South Carolina and later to Virginia.  The children of John and Sarah Crain were: Lucy (married Hiram Gragg), Nancy (married Zachariah Price), James R. (married Catherine Dogan), William (my grandfather, married Harriet Eleanor Tong), (Continue
